Biography
Stonewall Jackson was born on January 21, 1824 in Clarksburg, (back then Virginia) West Virginia. Growing up, he had a tough childhood growing up with 3 siblings. At age 2, he later lost his father and his older sister because they were killed by Typhoid fever. His mother remarried to another man of the name Blake Woodson. After attending many local schools, Thomas enrolled in the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Many students teased him since he grew up with a poor family. Fortunately, this drove Stonewall to strive and graduate. In 1846, he graduated 17th in a class of 59. Right after graduation, he fought in the Mexican-American War, he quickly proved his braveness in the field, so he was promoted to the rank of Brevet Major. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson was a very vital part of the Civil War as well. Stonewall was a great, leading general for the Confederates. In the 1st battle of Bull Run, this was when we earned his nickname, Stonewall because of his brave ways to not back down and hold his ground, much like a stonewall. On May 2, 1863 Jackson was accidentally shot by friendly fire and then he had to get his arm amputated. He later died on May 10, 1863.
